Prep Your Home for the Fall

Summer is winding down… *sigh.* I am a summer baby that is a Cancer through and through. And as much as I love fall, I am hanging on to the summer vibes for as long as possible. But there’s no denying that the leaves are going to start to fall before we know it, and there’s some home maintenance that should be addressed while the weather is still warm and before those leaves start to fall.

As the kids head back to school, take some time to review this checklist of items to make sure you’re prepared as the seasons change.

Exterior Maintenance

  1. Check gutters for any damage and make sure that they are properly secured to the house

  2. Clean gutters and downspouts for any debris — this is especially important as fall leaves will accumulate in the gutters so you want them cleared out before hand for easier cleanup later.

  3. Have your chimney cleaned and maintained by a professional.

  4. Check your siding for damage and any signs of needing repair — don’t wait until the weather gets cold to address them.

Cleaning/Organizing

We tend to associate deep cleaning with springtime, but it’s good practice to take some time to do some deep cleaning and organizing for the changing of each season. Clean out your fridge, throw out any spices that have expired, etc. so you can start with a clean slate heading into the fall.

Take inventory of your clothes and anything that is considered a summer item that you did not wear at all this year, considering donating it.

Interior Maintenance

  1. Clean clothes dryer exhaust vent and behind washer/dryer.

  2. Check and repair caulking around windows and doors to prevent future drafts.

  3. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  4. Clean and replace air filters as needed.

Once you’ve gone through the items on this checklist, you’re ready to pull out the pumpkin decor and apple-scented candles, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Fall is just around the corner!
